Re: Blunderbuss lyric discussion
This has been stuck in my head all morning--
"A chill comes over me, and it turn me on when the music takes over me..."
"A chill comes over me, and it turn me on when the music takes over me..."
"And the message is clear: if we want Jack White as our hero, he will entertain, but not pander. We have to accept all his flaws, whims, caprices and manias as a critical, sometimes uncomfortable, part of the contract."

Sounds like he is talking about TWS to me.
yep... yep...
Yeah that's definitely directed toward Meg and The White Stripes. And, it sounds like there's a little animosity there lol.

Re: Blunderbuss lyric discussion
if these lyrics are aimed at Meg I hope she takes them as compliments on her strength as a woman for getting out when she felt the stripes were done, and not a slight. She has been pure class in her silence since the break up and a response to any of this other than her usual smile would be a real shame.
Don't believe the 60's was the golden age of pop. You glorify the past when the future dries up.

From what Jack has said in recent interviews (can't think of which one right now, one that bh1441 (?) had scanned and posted online), I don't think these lyrics pertain to the stripes or anything else in his life. He said he doesn't involve her personal relationships because it's exploiting them. Also not to believe anything he says into a mic.

Wouldn't saying that be the perfect way to deflect attention? There is no way things in his private life don't factor into his songwriting. Get Behind Me Satan is a prime example of that.

I agree, but with Jack you never really know. We all know he likes to keep people guessing.

He would never, ever, EVER admit to writing a song about Meg and TWS break up. But, he has and the song is called, "Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy."orangeshoeskid wrote:From what Jack has said in recent interviews (can't think of which one right now, one that bh1441 (?) had scanned and posted online), I don't think these lyrics pertain to the stripes or anything else in his life. I dunno if it's been mentioned or not, but if the way Jack means it as white people "selling authenticity through blues music", it makes sense then to me why I automatically think of Elvis Presley's "Poor Boy", which would be so fitting in Jack's scheme. I mean who's the first white king making big off the blues? No offense meant to Jack in any way, just saying.I Ate The Walrus wrote:Kali Durga wrote:I Ate The Walrus wrote:Hip Eponymous Poor Boy:

From the recent NME article--
When I wrote "let the stripes unfurl", I was talking about the American dream... not Meg. But I don't mind that metaphor, because it also deals with the subject, which is about hip white people selling authenticity through blues music.
'Using your name' (he took Meg's surname), I usually ignore the artists interpretation as gospel anyway. The beauty of lyrics like these is that they are open to a number of interpretations.

I love the ending too. It's perfect how he speeds up the timing to fit an excessive number of notes into such a small count. Love it.Jettkoral wrote:THANK YOU! It's getting bashed way too much. Re: Blunderbuss lyric discussion
Kinda ironic, huh? I do quite like Eminem (don't tell Jack), and I really appreciate the song that you quoted. But, I have to say, Jack is honorably keeping alive at least two traditions that could easily fall to the wayside. I'm glad he's so passionate about keeping American roots music alive, and hats off to him that it is serving him well to do so. Some people sell their souls to be able to play better and/or make money; others willingly, gladly give them for maintaining, furthering the Good. Yay Jack!hawke000 wrote: Eminem Lyrics:
