Deep Cuts - WS Version

Post by TRWS75 »

I read Hamptonio's topic in the Other Bands section and was curious what other people thought were Jack and Meg's hidden gems. As Dave put so well "This page is dedicated to those lesser heard, but just as important tracks that make up the albums we know and love."

I've always liked "I Can Learn" from WBC, especially the structure of the song and the ending. I also enjoy Jack's singing and the guitar sound. Lyrically it's not the best but works for me.

And this, ladies and gents, is why so many of us love and/or hate him! 8-)

Someone needs to look up the difference between qualitative and quantitative.
A lot of post I've seen lately just simply waste my time and yours...

To get back to a real thread with real post...

I've always found Jack covering any of Dylan's songs to be my favorite hidden gems.
Especially "Black Jack Davey" and "Lovesick"...

I also think Take, Take, Take is one of my ATFs that doesn't get a lot press..

People only seem to think of that one in reference to situations in which the message applies. But it really is a fantastically constructed song.

Why Can't You Be Nicer To Me struck me yesterday as one that's too often overlooked. So easy to miss just how dark that song is unless you really listen, but then it becomes pretty damned powerful.
"And the message is clear: if we want Jack White as our hero, he will entertain, but not pander. We have to accept all his flaws, whims, caprices and manias as a critical, sometimes uncomfortable, part of the contract."

Offend In Every Way or Now Mary are both songs I really like but seem a bit underappreciated.
I'd also agree with Grim on Black Jack Davey and Take, Take, Take.

Girl You Have No Faith in Medicine for one. Such a good track. And Screwdriver, if you can call that a deep cut.

I'm digging "Do" off S/T lately. The live version performed at Blackpool is particularily awesome in my opinion.

I love "Apple Blossom". My wife and I had that played at our wedding, people didn't get it but it was special to us (and that's what matters). Also "I'm Bound To Pack It Up", "Same Boy You've Always Known" and "We're Going To Be Friends" are all great songs too. My favourite songs, are those when Jack and Meg are really rocking out "Black Math" etc. but those songs that are a bit tender are just really, really well written.
•<Jack White> we also want to come up with vault packages you don't like, a streaming service to make rich people richer, a t shirt
too big for you, and a bunch of shit you don't want but we're hold ing a gun to your head to purchase.

"Do" is certainly a powerful number, just watched the Blackpool version myself.
I've always been a big fan of "Truth Doesn't Make A Noise" - imo their most powerful song.

I don't remember where I came across Black Jack Davey, but all I know is that I'm thankful it's in my collection
