well... im gonna disagree about obsolescence and give Aqua a nod on the comment she made but respect and appreciate that you have a good criteria for truly memorable covers which push the bench mark to their artistry and thus ownershipflattop2001 wrote:theeradicaleclectic wrote:the atmospherics in that cover are really pretty unique ... at some point that sort of artistry has to be considered a bench mark
he does make it his own and bring some added impact to it
I think that for a cover artist to "make a song their own" the song needs to be well known and liked by the judge and the new version makes the original obsolete.
I don’t think it takes away from the original or makes it obsolete so I don’t think he "makes it his own" IMO
for me your opinion discounts my original above points of commentary... Jacks atmospherics leave bono and edge for a wanting if i do say so
the impact of Jacks emotive qualities range from primal eruption to calculated hand-vocal coordination wastes no element of dimension and U2 doesnt
ultimately owning the song is not as challenging as one might imagine to the point of expressing the idea that it would be harder for U2 to own a White Stripes or Dead Weather song than it is for Jack to own theirs ... does this put me in the 'only Jack camp' ... not really but it does create gradient value
so.. the benchmark was raised in my opinion and as minor as the upgrade was i think the song surrendered itself fully and Jack took it
